Description: In this one day workshop with mosaic artist, Caitlin Hepworth, students will learn how to create a mosaic using marble, a traditional and lasting mosaic medium used since antiquity. Students will learn about cutting and laying marble and other stone as well as how to create basic andamento (mosaic flow) in their work, a key element in Roman mosaic which still forms an integral part of mosaic language today.

During the day students will create a mosaic (approx. 18 x 18cm) using the direct method on a lightweight weatherproof substrate suitable for outdoor display.

We will use cement based adhesive which removes the need for grouting and allows the textures in the cut face of the stone to be featured.

Inspiration will be taken from the mosaics of Aquileia and Pompeii, Ancient Roman cities and now a Unesco World Heritage Sites.

Students can select from a range of pre-prepared designs which they can interpret in their own way and to their level of experience.

Completed mosaics will be coated with stone sealer which brings out the richness and depth of colour in the stone.

Times: 10am - 5pm AEST
Where: Hepworth Studios, Woodford, NSW

Fee: $280.00 (inc GST and materials)
Booking Deposit: $140

Tutor: Caitlin Hepworth

All Materials are included:  Italian and Mexican Smalti, adhesive, tools,  prepared weather proof substrate with hanger, Mexican and Italian smalti, cement based adhesive, use of mosaic nippers, tweezers, palette knives.

Workshop Description: In this one-day workshop with mosaic artist Caitlin Hepworth, students will learn how to create a mosaic using Smalti, which is a traditional and beautiful mosaic medium used in mosaics since the Byzantine Era.

Made in much the same way today, Smalti offers the ultimate in colour, texture and reflectivity in mosaic. Working with smalti from Italy and Mexico, students will become familiar with the different formats of smalti available as well as how to cut and lay the material for different effects.

During the day students will create a mosaic (approx. 18 x 18cm) using the direct method and cement-based adhesive on a lightweight weatherproof substrate.

Using cement adhesive removes the need for grout and allows for an irregular surface which enhances the reflective qualities of the mosaic material.

Inspiration will be taken from the stunning Byzantine ceiling mosaics of Ravenna a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Students can select from a range of pre-prepared designs which they can interpret in their own way and to their level of experience.

All designs will enable students to learn how to create basic andamento (mosaic flow) in their work.
