Aquileia to Pompeii
Roman Inspired Marble Mosaic
In this one day workshop with mosaic artist, Caitlin Hepworth, students will learn how to create a mosaic using marble a traditional and lasting mosaic medium used since antiquity. Students will learn about cutting and laying marble and other stone as well as how to create basic andamento (mosaic flow) in their work a key element in Roman mosaic which still forms an integral part of mosaic language today.
During the day students will work on a small mosaic (approx. 18 x 18cm) using the direct method on a lightweight weatherproof substrate suitable for outdoor display. We will use cement based adhesive which removes the need for grouting and allows the textures in the cut face of the stone to be featured. Inspiration will be taken from the mosaics of Aquileia and Pompeii, Ancient Roman cities and now a Unesco World Heritage Sites. Students can select from a range of pre-prepared designs which they can interpret in their own way and to their level of experience. Completed mosaics will be coated with stone sealer which brings out the richness and depth of colour in the stone.
