Workshop Description: In this one-day workshop with mosaic artist Caitlin Hepworth, students will learn how to create a mosaic using Smalti, which is a traditional and beautiful mosaic medium used in mosaics since the Byzantine Era. Made in much the same way today, Smalti offers the ultimate in colour, texture and reflectivity in mosaic. Working with smalti from Italy and Mexico, students will become familiar with the different formats of smalti available as well as how to cut and lay the material for different effects.
During the day students will work on a small sample mosaic (approx. 18 x 18cm) using the direct method and cement-based adhesive on a lightweight weatherproof substrate. Using cement adhesive removes the need for grout and allows for an irregular surface which enhances the reflective qualities of the mosaic material.
Inspiration will be taken from the stunning Byzantine ceiling mosaics of Ravenna a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Students can select from a range of pre-prepared designs which they can interpret in their own way and to their level of experience. All designs will enable students to learn how to create basic andamento (mosaic flow) in their work.
