Workshop Description
Join artist and teacher Caitlin Hepworth to learn to think differently about Sculptural Mosaic, where the development of the form is as much a consideration as the mosaic which is later applied to it. Caitlin has come to mosaic practice from a sculptural background and she aims to share her knowledge and love of this complex artform and its infinite possibilities.
It is Caitlin’s belief that in sculptural mosaic the form and the tesserae must energetically connect and work together to convey the artist’s intention. The two elements are co-dependent and intrinsically linked and for a successful outcome the sculptural form itself must be valid. Many mosaicists have well developed skills in the creative and technical aspects of mosaic, however many lack training and skills in sculpture and conceptual development.
In this workshop, students will learn strategies to explore, develop, evaluate and construct sculptural forms for mosaic.
This session should particularly benefit those who are interested in broadening their practice to include sculpture as well as those who have already begun to work in 3D.
Includes all materials and tools, eBooks of each presentation, delicious morning tea and afternoon refreshments.
Note: This workshop does not include any mosaicing however the mosaic application is discussed where relevant throughout the workshop.

Materials Preparation
Having an idea of where your sculptural design is heading allows Caitlin to thoroughly prepare for your arrival by selecting the most appropriate construction materials and methods for your form .
Caitlin works with her team to rough cut materials for each student to maximise workshop time.

Day 1: Friday ( 3 hrs)
Presentation 3:
Sculptural Process - From Concept to Completion Outlines the steps in making a mosaic sculpture - concept development, drawing, maquette making, scaling up the form, making a substrate, developing a colour palette mosaicing the sculpture. (45 minutes) Sharing of Student Design Proposals Get to know who is in your group and what they are planning to create and how. Sharing ideas, processes and problems is a very important part of the learning. (45 minutes) Sculptural Games Conclude the evening with som fun activities designed to loosen up your 3D thinking. (45 minutes) |
Day 2: Saturday (7 hrs)Commence Construction of Substrate
Day 3: Sunday (7 hrs)Presentation 4: Palette Preparation - Hue, Value Chroma Mathematical ways to go from a small scale model to a larger scale form. Presentation 5: Tesserae - Prepare, Format, Personalise Considerations when applying tesserae to a three dimensional form. Continue to resolve the form. Evaluation and Photography |
