VILLA RUSTICA: BYRON BAY HINTERLAND
Learn the skills needed to draw, compose and create your own Still Life Mosaic inspired by the palette & subject matter of Australia’s iconic artist Margaret Olley in this four-day intensive.

LEVEL: Upper Intermediate - Advanced
Students must have a prior understanding of colour theory and andamento ( Level 4 or above)  as well as be familiar with working in smalti with thinset (cement based adhesive).

To help students to get the most out of the four day workshop, students will meet online two weeks prior for a 90 minute class. 

This class will expand students existing knowledge of Margaret Olley and the genre of Still Life through three separate presentations by Caitlin.

Presentation 1:  The Genre of Still life
Sign posts in the development of Still Life from Pompeii to Modernism

Presentation 2: ​An overview of Margaret Olley's Life and Work
Preliminary Presentation on Margaret Olley’s life and work and her importance as a female artist in Australian Art history.

Presentation 3: Still Life Compositional Techniques
Examine compositional techniques as seen in focus works of Margaret Olley.

Homework: Further references to watch & read before the workshop. 

DAY 1 - THURSDAY 6 NOV

10am: View the Margaret Olley collection, studio and memorial garden. 

11am: Gallery Talk with MOAC Representative

12 pm: Lunch at Gallery Cafe, with Panoramic views of the Tweed River

AFTERNOON SESSION
​
Venue: Villa Rustica Gallery


2pm - 5pm: Still Life Drawing Class
  • Participate in a sequence of fun warm up drawing exercises.
  • Explore technical aspects of drawing ellipses and cylinders.
  • Learn how to represent objects in space in relation to one another and under a light source.
  • Complete a sequence of short drawings which investigate different viewpoints of one larger still life.
  • Develop one larger scale drawing of your preferred viewpoint. 


5pm: Welcome Drinks and light meal at Villa Rustica

DAY 2 - FRIDAY 7 NOV

MORNING SESSION
Venue: Bella Studio, Villa Rustica
9.30am - 12.30pm: Composition and Colour Planning
Working from the drawings and photographs created in Thursdays drawing class,  students work through a series of exercises to  resolve a design suitable for mosaic.

Following a reminder of colour theory principles students analyse the use of colour in Olley's still life works before undertaking their own colour planning activities and palette preparation. 
12.30pm: Catered Lunch at Villa Rustica

AFTERNOON SESSION
Venue: Bella Studio, Villa Rustica
1.30pm - 4.30pm: Andamento Planning and getting started
Students plan the andamenti for focus areas of their design before setting up a working board for the direct on plastic technique . 

DAY 3 & 4
SATURDAY 8 & SUNDAY 9 NOV

Students work on developing the focus areas of the composition, working from front to back.
Evaluating value, scale, chroma, andamento, reflectivity, contrast.
Closing daily discussion of student work to evaluate progress and plan next steps. 
Students may not finish the mosaic in the workshop time but will be supplied with smalti (total 1.5kg)  to complete their mosaic at home.

About Tutor Caitlin Hepworth: 

Caitlin initially trained in Visual Arts, and majored in sculpture and drawing at the National Art School Sydney. She graduated in 2000 and then completed a Master of Teaching in Visual Arts Education at the University of Sydney. Caitlin has taught Visual Arts and Mosaic extensively since 2001 at schools, galleries and studios throughout Australia and is a sort after tutor of mosaic both nationally and internationally.

Caitlin is a leader in mosaic education in Australia and strives to increase the understanding and representation of mosaic art in creative communities. She teaches in person through Hepworth Studios and online through Art of Andamento and facilitates a global mosaic community.

Terms and Conditions.​
We manage workshop numbers to ensure a quality experience for all students.
This means that last minute cancellations have a serious impact on the viability of workshops for all students.
In addition to workshop fees, many students are paying for flights and accommodation to attend. 
In order to ensure workshops proceed the following terms apply.
- Workshop deposits are required to secure your place.
- The fees are refundable less $50 admin fee only if your place is taken by another student from the waiting list once the workshop is fully booked.
- Within 14 days of the workshop there are no refunds available, however you may gift or privately sell your place to another student.
​In the event that a workshop is cancelled due to Covid 19 restrictions, tutor illness, or an extreme weather event, a full refund will be provided.
