Mosaic Taster courses are designed for beginners who would like to learn specific mosaic techniques. These short courses conveniently include all the tools, materials and resources necessary to complete the project.

This class provides students with an introduction to Garden Mosaics. Skills are learnt and then practiced in the development of a 30cm x 30cm mosaic for a paver or wall hanging panel. Students will be working with vitreous glass tiles and gems which are easy to cut and have a colourful aesthetic. See below for a detailed breakdown of classes. Tools and Materials: All materials are supplied. Students are issued with a tool box for use in the studio, which contains the tools and safety equipment needed. |
Lesson Breakdown.
In this 10 hour course students will learn the following skills. Lesson 1 - Different types of mosaic tesserae - Different types of mosaic nippers (wheeled and compound) and when to use each one. - Cutting techniques for using wheeled nippers to cut vitreous glass - Cutting Half, quarter, and sixth tesserae, keystone pieces, and irregular pieces - Preparation of a small sample board - Developing a mosaic cartoon (design) - Setting up a working board for the 'direct on mesh' technique - Selecting a colour palette of vitreous glass for your design Lesson 2 - The difference between interior and exterior mosaic adhesives - Mixing and slaking and bagging adhesive - Adhering tesserae to the mesh - Learning about interstices and flow lines in mosaic - Identification of different Mosaic Opus and where they are used Tessellatum, Vermiculatum. Palladianum - Continued cutting skills, creating simple curves with tesserae Lesson 3 - Focussed lesson on completing your mosaic Lesson 4 - Adhering your mesh mosaic to the substrate - Completing remainder of the mosaic direct - Preparation of a grout testing sample - Where to buy tools and materials for mosaic Lesson 5 - Selecting grout colour for your mosaic - Viewing grout sampler and different effects of different coloured grout on your design - Role and attributes of grout vs cement based adhesive (Thinset) - Mixing and slaking and apply grout and using grout additives - Cleaning and removing grout off the mosaic - Celebrate & plan whats next! |
