INTRODUCTION TO CLASSICAL MOSAICS
A TASTER COURSE WITH ANDREA KETTERLING
Mosaic Taster courses are designed for beginners who would like to learn specific mosaic techniques. These short courses conveniently include all the tools, materials and resources necessary to complete the project.

Provide students with an introduction to Classical Mosaic. Skills are learnt and then practiced in the development of a mosaic fragment adhered to a 25cm x 25cm substrate for interior display. Students will be working with Cinca (high fired Porcelain) which is easy to cut and has a classical aesthetic. See below for a detailed breakdown of classes. Tools and Materials: All materials are supplied. Students are issued with a tool box for use in the studio which contains the tools and safety equipment needed. |

Lesson Breakdown.
In this 10 hour course students will learn the following skills. Lesson 1 - Different types of mosaic tesserae ( vitreous glass, porcelain, smalti, marble, ceramic, stained glass) - Different types of mosaic nippers (wheeled and compound) and when to use each one. - Cutting techniques for using compound nippers to cut Cinca (high fired porcelain) - Cutting half, quarter, and sixth tesserae, keystone pieces - Preparation of a small sample board - Developing a mosaic cartoon (design) - Preparation of an interior mosaic substrate - Transferring the mosaic designs to the substrate - Selecting a colour palette of Cinca for your design Lesson 2 - Learning about interstices and flow lines in mosaic - Identification of different mosaic Opus and where they are used Tessellatum, Regulatum, Vermiculatum - Continued cutting skills, creating simple curves with tesserae - Adhering tesserae to the substrate - The difference between interior and exterior mosaic adhesives Lesson 3 - Focussed lesson on completing your mosaic fragment Lesson 4 - Focussed lesson on completing your mosaic fragment - Preparation of a grout testing sample - Where to buy tools and materials for mosaic Lesson 5 - Sealing cinca tiles prior to grouting - Selecting grout colour for your mosaic - Viewing grout sampler and different effects of different coloured grout on your design - Role and attributes of grout vs cement based adhesive - Mixing, slaking and applying grout - Cleaning and removing grout off the mosaic - Mixing and applying render around your mosaic - Attaching hangers - Celebrate & plan what's next! |
