Global studio series
Bringing the best to the Blue Mountains

Guest Artist 1: Kelley KNickerbocker
7th and 8th AUGUST 2021

cancelled due to covid restrictions

As the world changes, we are adapting the way we operate, and finding new ways to continue to bring you the best learning opportunities from around the globe.
In this new platform, we welcome tutors virtually to the studio, presented on a series of screens throughout the studio spaces.
Tutors deliver their course to a studio of eager students, I assist the tutor by providing digital coordination, hands on assistance and technical guidance.
In this way students experience the energy and inspiration of a physical workshop, without our tutors needing to travel across the globe to be with us.

In the first of this series we welcome back Kelley Knickerbocker who is a much loved tutor at Hughes Studio.
Kelley joins us from Seattle USA to present two new courses outlined below.

BEYOND ADHESIVE:
apoxie sculpt as mosaic material
Saturday 7th August 2021

Picture
Date: Saturday 7th August
Time: 8.30am  - 3.30pm
Schedule
- Arrive at 8.30am for a 9am Workshop start.
- MT Break 10.30am - 10.45am
- Lunch Break - 1.00pm - 1.30pm
- Workshop end 3.00pm

- Refreshments and mingling 3.00pm - 3.30pm.

Fee: $220 ($160 + $40 Materials Fee + GST)
BYO: Lunch, Mug, Apron and Nippers and Goggles (if you have them), Dress Warmly.

Workshop Description: Apoxie Sculpt has gained a lot of fame in the mosaicsphere as an adhesive for filati and jewellry, but did you know it can also be tinted to any colour and used as a mosaic material? In this course Kelley spills the beans about tinting white, natural and black AS with tube oil paints to create multi-value gradients and metallic gilding. From there we’ll learn how to wrap an entire mosaic with one or multiple colours of Apoxy Sculpt for as discreet or visible a frame as you wish, to protect your edges from dings and fingerprints. Did we mention you can also form bumps, curls, wrinkles, and divots into your edges, and tuck little surprises in between the mosaic and the AS edge and/or between the AS edging layers? These steps are where the adhesive, sculptural, and strength properties of AS come together! And speaking of edging, you’ll practice wrapping individual tesserae (as many layers as you like!) for a bit of colour zing or metallic bling anywhere in your mosaic, and get ready to learn how to contour design elements or sections of your mosaic with a line of AS for definition, emphasis, or continuity. Finally, you’ll form several individual elements out of AS, using it as you would any other sculptural clay to form rosettes, sticks, rings…let your imagination fly! When you’ve completed this course you’ll understand how to tint and form two-part epoxy putty like a pro; to add either subtle or dramatic colour, texture and objects to enliven and protect your mosaics and visually strengthen your mosaic designs.

The Shape of Things to Come:
Fast, Fun Abstract Mosaic Elements

SUNDAY 8th AUGUST 2021

Picture
Date: Sunday 8th August
Time: 8.30am  - 3.30pm
Schedule
- Arrive at 8.30am for a 9am Workshop start.
- MT Break 10.30am - 10.45am
- Lunch Break - 1.00pm - 1.30pm
- Workshop end 3.00pm

- Refreshments and mingling 3.00pm - 3.30pm.

Fee: $220 ($160 + $40 Materials Fee + GST)
BYO: Lunch, Mug, Apron and Nippers and Goggles (if you have them), Dress Warmly.
Workshop Description: Deciding what your design elements will be and how to arrange them can be the most difficult aspects of beginning an abstract mosaic. Constructing, deconstructing and reconstructing simple shapes is a fun, easy way to use up scraps and combine materials to form the building blocks or targets of a dynamic abstract composition. Setting directly into mortar, students will create a variety of compound shapes and then use them as the framework to map a dynamic composition (20cm x 20cm). Instruction will be via presentation, handouts, demos, discussion, hands-on building, and one-on-one guidance.
