EYES OF THE ANCIENTS
|
TIME: 10AM - 5PM both days
FEE: $495AUD including materials 8 participants. Tutors: Caitlin Hepworth & Andrea Ketterling WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:
Step into the visual language of the ancient world and bring a fragment to life. In this two day workshop, you will create a framed marble mosaic study of a Greco-Roman eye, drawing inspiration from powerful historical sources such as the gaze of the Titan Oceanus, the eye of Alexander the Great, or the enigmatic Green Man, a foliate symbol of humanity’s deep connection to nature. The workshop begins with an introduction to the historical context and symbolism behind these works. From there, the focus shifts to hands-on making. You will be guided through the process of constructing your own eye fragment using the direct method. Working with both Italian and Turkish marble, you will learn to cut and shape small tesserae using the hammer and hardie, developing more control and technique. By the end of the workshop, you will have completed a framed eye mosaic suitable for indoor display. This workshop is ideal for intermediate level students who are looking to deepen their technical skills while engaging with the rich visual and symbolic traditions of ancient mosaic. All tools and materials are included in the fee. |
