children's mosaic class (ages 12+)
In children's mosaic classes students learn about the different techniques, tools and materials used in the ancient practice of mosaic. The children cut all their own tesserae and are learning to understand andamento, key stoning, and other important mosaic techniques. Each term we create a new project that expands their knowledge and skills.
In Term 2 Classes will be held remotely. Students will create a mosaic side table in the direct method.

Students spent two full terms designing and making their 'Tree of Life Mosaic'. They started by making and glazing ceramic inclusions the completed the mosaic with glazed ceramic tiles.
marble mosaicStudents learnt to work with marble rods cutting and laying into a cement adhesive bedding. Their subject matter was the buildings of the historic Woodford Academy
undulating leafStudents learnt to make their leaf substrates and mosaiced the undulating form with vitreous glass and cement based adhesive.
garden mushroomsStudents created their personalised mushroom substrate from foam cones and domes before preparing the shape for mosaic and applying colourful tesserae with cement adhesive.
|
fish mosaic on hand made substrateStudents learnt to make a substrate in the shape of tropical fish. They mosaiced their substrate with vitreous glass tiles.
roman inspired mosaicStudents were inspired by the style and colours of Roman mosaics. They learnt about Vermiculatum and Tessellatum and used unglazed ceramic tile for a matt effect.
garden domesStudents designed their mosaic to work around cement domes. Then applied the tesserae directly with cement based adhesive. These look fabulous in the garden.
|
garden bowlStudents learnt to work in the indirect method on sticky plastic - working upside down and back to front before setting the mosaic into their bowl and mosaicing the sides directly.
exhibition entriesStudents are encouraged to enter exhibitions. Exhibition work is always made with the students own choice of subject matter/theme.
mosaic clocksStudents created a custom shape for their clock which was cut out then mosaiced with vitreous glass. Clock mechanisms were fitted to create a working clock.

Please note: Students will be cutting glass/stone and using other potentially hazardous materials such as cement based products and adhesives. Small cuts to the fingers and hands are common. Safety instructions of the teacher must be followed at all times, safety glasses must be kept on and sturdy closed shoes must be worn. Failure to abide by safe working practices will result in the child no longer being able to participate in the class.
